READING
FIRST
Poteau Primary School is a Reading First School. Reading
First is a
federally funded reading grant that is provided by the Oklahoma
State Department of Education. Reading First was established
in response to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 that President
Bush signed into law January, 2002. The goal of Reading
First is to ensure that all children learn to read well by
the end of third grade. This goal is met by providing k-3
students with quality reading instruction as well as preparing
classroom teachers to deliver high quality, explicit and
systematic instruction in the five essential areas of reading
instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary,
fluency, and comprehension.
